From Goodreads:
Born (Born #1)
by Tara Brown
"It's us and them, Em. There are no regular people anymore."
Ten years ago when the world ended she ran for her life.
Five weeks ago the world she'd hidden from came knocking on the door of her secluded cabin.
Ten days ago she found salvation hiding amongst the dead.
Yesterday she went back for the living.
Today she wonders if she will live to see tomorrow.
What do you do when the world you were born to is gone?
Where do you hide when even your own body isn't safe?
Emma ran when her daddy told her to. She hid like he said she should. He was the first person she turned her back on. The first one she let die.
Ten years has gone by and she still lives by the simple rules he taught her when she was nine years old.
"Don't help anyone. Don't go where other people are unless you have to. Trust no one. Always pull the trigger."
Until one night she hears the worst sound in the world, a knock. A simple, timid knock, on the door to her cabin.
Only the voice of the brave little girl, ready to die for her brother, persuades Emma to open the door.
As her fingers turn the lock, she has a terrible feeling she will regret her decision.
But even as regret fills her world, so do love and companionship. Things she never imagined she would ever have again.
Everything comes at a cost, you decide what you'll pay.
My Review:
I have to admit the reason I began reading this book is not a positive one. There was a review about a book by an author that I love and it was comparing that book to Born. It was basically a negative review for the other book. I know not everyone agrees in option, but I was curious as to what this reviewer saw in Born. So I bought Born and started reading. I loved it but it did not change my love for the other book either. Anyway, my point is that this is an amazing read, even if I did start reading it for a less than positive reason. I am glad I did.
This is the post-apocalyptic genre that I love with zombies. It opens with a young woman what has been alone for ten years. She was raised by a paranoid father that taught her to survive in this new world. He died shortly after civilization was destroyed. Emma has only her pet wolf, Leo that she raised from a cub as a companion. She has been raised to trust no one. “It is us or them,” is the advice her father repeatedly told her.
Then one night a knock on her door changed everything. The visit, the only one she has ever had, needs Emma’s help. Anna begs her to help her to help her brother even at the cost of her own life. Emma is compelled to help Anna even though she knows that it is safer and easier not to open her door.
This new world that Emma lives in is filled with things that are much scarier that zombies. The remaining government is trying to breed a supreme race. They have breeding farms where they are keeping young women of child bearing age as prisons and impregnating them against their will. There are cities that are run by the government, but only the chosen are allowed to live there. There are work farms that raise the food for the breeder farms and the cities and the workers are not volunteers.
Anna and her brother, Jake, becomes family to Emma. When Emma is kidnapped another girl Meg helps her escape there is another membered added to her clan. On her way back to Anna and Jake she finds their missing older brother, Will, and yet another addition to her growing family. It seems that when she opened the door for Anna, she also opened her heart.
Emma learns that Anna has been taken to the breeder farm and is hell bent on getting her back. The day they took Anna is the beginning of the end for the people in charge of the new government and Emma is destined to become a legend.

I am not going to talk in the third person. It feels weird.
I am a Canadian author of Paranormal Romance, Post Apocalyptic and Fantasy novels. Mostly because I think I have Writers ADD, I like to call it WADD. It might be a real thing.
I write New Adult, my books have sexual content (Heck yes) and Swearing. You have been warned. Now enjoy!
I have a beagle named Buster, a husband who I force to read everything I write and two girls who want so badly to be a character in my books. And not in that order.
I am mid thirties so be prepared for the chick lit novel this year. I am calling it my Ode to my Midlife Crisis.
I have been writing since I was old enough to lie. So for some time.
Welcome to my world. Please enjoy the ride.
